DRUM MAKING WORKSHOP

Program Day 1

• Honor Great Spirit, Directions and create scared space, with chanting and drumming.
• Ask Great Spirit for guidance, wisdom and connection with the spirit of drum we are bringing forth.
• Introduce each of other and share any thoughts where we are on our spiritual journey.
• What is a drum, (from a physical and spiritual perspective), how does it help us?
• How does the drum serve as a bridge to Spirit World and helps to connects to our essences? What is our essences?

Construction of Drum

• Select type, animal hide size and shape
• Soften hide and lace by putting in cold water over night.
• Stretch hide on smooth surface to even hide.
• Align and make holes on hide for lacing
• Stretch lacing across drum and tie, use pliers.
• Use tacks to secure loose parts of hide to wood frame, by hammering gently.
• Use soft leather to bring laces together, tighten drum and create soft place to hold drum.
• Let drum dry, don’t drum until fully dried.
